5 Winter Gardening Tips

  • Test your soil pH – Many homeowners aren’t aware that soil conditions can vary drastically in the same region. And with the hundred of varietals of plants, knowing your soil pH is a helpful way to narrow your landscape choices.
  • Talk to a landscape designer – Many companies will provide you with a complimentary initial assessment of your property. This is a good preemptive measure to get an idea of the installation timeline, cost and maintenance needs. Seeking advice from several companies is the best way to find a good balance of quality service and value.
  • Make a list – Designing an entire front and backyard can seem overwhelming, especially to people not familiar with the process. By making a list of what you want, whether that’s a water feature, herb garden or flowerbed, you can streamline the design process and break it up into doable sections.
  • Start budgeting for spring – Landscaping can range from extremely affordable to intimidatingly expensive. Look up the cost of some of your favorite plants to get an idea of the base price. Then make sure to factor in money for labor and design costs.
  • Research – Whether you love boxwoods or rose bushes, there are more varieties than you’ve probably encountered. Take the remaining winter months as a chance to sort through some of the different plants you prefer. This will help speed along the design process and ensure you get exactly what you want.
